The Perfect Pour Over: A Step-by-Step Guide

Master the Art of Pour Over Coffee

Pour over coffee is one of the most rewarding brewing methods, offering complete control over your coffee's flavor profile. With the right technique, you can unlock the full potential of your specialty coffee beans.

What You'll Need

  • Pour over dripper (V60, Chemex, or Kalita Wave)
  • Paper filter
  • Freshly roasted coffee beans
  • Burr grinder
  • Gooseneck kettle
  • Scale (optional but recommended)
  • Timer

The Perfect Pour Over Recipe

Coffee-to-Water Ratio: 1:16 (e.g., 20g coffee to 320g water)

Grind Size: Medium-fine, similar to sea salt

Water Temperature: 195-205°F (90-96°C)

Total Brew Time: 3-4 minutes

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare Your Setup
Place the filter in your dripper and rinse with hot water. This removes paper taste and preheats your brewer. Discard the rinse water.

2. Grind and Add Coffee
Grind your coffee just before brewing. Add grounds to the filter and give it a gentle shake to level the bed.

3. The Bloom (0:00-0:45)
Start your timer and pour twice the weight of your coffee in water (e.g., 40g water for 20g coffee). This releases CO2 and prepares the grounds for extraction. Wait 30-45 seconds.

4. Main Pour (0:45-2:30)
Pour in slow, steady circles from the center outward, avoiding the edges. Pour in stages, maintaining a consistent water level. Aim to finish pouring by 2:30.

5. Final Drawdown (2:30-3:30)
Allow the water to fully drain through the coffee. Your total brew time should be 3-4 minutes.
